Planning Questions
The CLPRTM Helps Answer

How can you use the results of your longevity report to help you make a better financial plan? There are many possible ways.

Here we list 32 planning questions the CLPR can help answer, adapted with permission from an article by well-known financial planning and tax expert Stephan R. Leimberg, Esq. The article, “Life Expectancy Analysis: Planning Tool of the Future Is Here Now,” was published in the September 2008 issue of The Estate Planning Journal. Click here to download the full article.

RETIREMENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNING:

  • Will my financial resources last as long as I do?
  • How much money will I need at retirement?
  • How long will that money have to last?
  • When should I start taking social security benefits? (Should I start taking social security before full retirement age?)
  • When should I start making withdrawals from an annuity or qualified plan or IRA?
  • Should I take a lump sum rather than annuity payments from the retirement plan?
  • Should I insist my agent investigate a substandard annuity, and can an LCR [longevity curve report such as the CLPR] help to bargain for a better rate or higher income?
  • Should I retire (earlier)(later) knowing my life expectancy?
  • Can I afford to (afford not to) make significant charitable gifts now?
  • If my life expectancy is relatively short, should I view it positively as a signal (“permission”?) to use more income/capital currently?
  • Should my money be invested in securities with maturities that more closely match my lifespan probabilities?
  • Taking into consideration my life expectancy, is my portfolio properly balanced for income/ growth?
  • Should I be making shorter term, higher income producing investments?
LIFE INSURANCE PLANNING

  • Should I be converting my term life insurance policy to some type of permanent coverage?
  • Should the conversion be done now or at some later date?
  • Should I, if I have health problems, buy all the association/group term life coverage I can?
  • Do I – or my heirs – have a looming estate tax problem that buying a second-to-die policy could solve? (Policy proceeds can pay the estate taxes.)
  • Does my (short)(long) life expectancy indicate the desirability/appropriateness of a different type of insurance policy/portfolio?
  • Should I be purchasing term or permanent coverage?
  • Should I buy the life insurance I’ve been contemplating – even though I’m not “standard,” and I’ll have to pay a rating?
LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING

  • Is there a realistic need for long-term care insurance, i.e., how likely is it that I’ll live to an age where protecting assets for my spouse and/or for future generations is important?
  • How much money is likely to be required for my long-term care, based on my probable life expectancy?
ESTATE PLANNING

  • Given my (short)(long) life expectancy, how time-critical is it to get the documents drafted and otherwise complete my estate plan?
  • If I already have an estate plan, what changes should be made to it knowing how (short)(long) my life expectancy is?
  • How long will assets in a trust have to last to provide for my spouse or adult child?
  • Over how many years is my estate likely to appreciate while I’m living – and how large is the estate (and estate tax burden) likely to be?
  • Should I accelerate a gift-giving program?
LIFE SETTLEMENT PLANNING

  • Should I “hold” (retain) or “fold” (sell) life insurance I currently own?
  • What is the impact on the hold-fold decision if my life expectancy is much (shorter)(longer) than I thought?
CHARITABLE PLANNING

  • Does a gift annuity make economic sense for me?
  • How much payback can I anticipate from a charitable remainder (CRAT or CRUT) trust – whereby I transfer asset ownership to a charity but continue to use the assets until my death?
BUY-SELL PLANNING

  • How should I structure a buy-sell agreement with my partners? What logical assumptions about survivorship should we make in drafting it?
